When life gets unbearably hard and overwhelming, our initial instinct is to often run and escape the troubles we’re face to face with. We’ll cling to anything that distracts our minds from the pain or fear that besets us. But the way through crisis isn't about finding the right exit. It's about finding the right SAVIOR.

While facing some of his most overwhleming and terrifing moments, David cried out with deep pleas and moanings to the Lord, desperately wishing he had wings like a dove to “fly and be at rest”! He longed to escape the horror that was surrounding him, and desired a safe shelter; somewhere to get away from the torment encompassing him.

But David didn’t just stay in a state of fantasizing about escape; he began fighting through prayer, and not just as a one-time quick-fix action, but as a way to declare his continual dependence on the Lord, he cried out to Him evening, and morning, and noon.

And here’s the transformational truth that David held on to during these moments, that we too can grip onto: God hears. God redeems. And God reigns. When we pray we're not just venting into the universe, with no hope in sight. Instead, as we turn to the Lord and cast our burdens to Him, He promises to not only sympathize but to sustain us. To be upheld by Him with His supply of strength needed to continue walking through this life.

This is what an unshaken soul looks like. It's not someone with perfect circumstances. It's someone with anguished faith and in honesty might say “I’m weak. I'm scared. I want out. BUT my eyes are on You. I will trust You.”

So if you’re in that place right now, looking for any way of escape out of your circumstances, don’t lose heart. Christ our Savior knows the anguish of Gethsemane, so turn to Him. Not once, but continuously. Evening, morning, and noon. Again and again. It might not be perfect faith, but with honest anguish, cast your burdens to the Lord, and trust the One who is enthroned. He WILL sustain you.
