There is no doubt that betrayal from a person you trusted, or from a friend you once confided in, is devestatingly hard to endure.

We expect to have some sort of opposition from the world or perhaps strangers, but for some of us, the deepest wounds have come from people who at one point have prayed for us, served beside us, shared meals with us, or even knew our struggles.

Even while doing everything seemingly right, we were still wounded.

Even while showing mercy, we were misunderstood.

And even while being faithful to God, we lost friends.

While there is often no way to avoid or prevent betrayal, Psalm 41 shows us how David responded to these moments in his life. Not only with enemies that wanted him dead and decietful visitors who sought to attack his character, he too had a close friend, not just a mere acquaintance, but someone he fully confided in, that contemptuously and deliberately betrayed him.

While human tendency can be to conjure up revenge because of the pain experinced, David prays for restoration, for the purpose of remaining faithful to fulfill the calling God had on his life. David entrusted justice to the Lord. He didn't take matters into his own hands. He asked God to vindicate him—and then he trusted the LORD’s timing and method.

What’s even more of an astounding reminder, is that this too points us to what Christ endured for us. Jesus does not merely understand betrayal—He entered into it. He knows what it's like to be stabbed in the back by someone who ate at His table. And because He was betrayed, He can sustain us through the hardest moments of betrayal that we have to encounter. Remember, you're not alone in your pain.
