Maundy Thursday is the Thursday of Holy Week, the night Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper and on which he was betrayed. The name derives from the Latin mandatum novum, the “new commandment” that Jesus taught his disciples on the night in which he washed their feet, “Love one another, even as I have loved you.” Christians have observed Maundy Thursday for centuries as a vivid reminder of Christ’s self-giving love and his call to us to share in that love and to make it known in our lives.
