July 15, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Deuteronomy 8:1–5, Isaiah 53:4, Numbers 33:1–2, Psalm 37:23–24, Romans 8:28–29
The name Massei means “journey.” In this weeks portion we see how the Children of Israel’s journey was documented from Egypt to the land of Canaan. It describes the stages of their lives until they reached Moab. Each place that the Children of Israel camped represented a specific stage in their spiritual development and maturity. Tent pegs were not pulled up until what needed to happen to them served its purpose. Every step we are to take has already been orchestrated by the Creator. Every season has a reason; everything in life serves a purpose. If we have been called according to His purpose, then we are being conformed to the image of His Son. Meaning that each step, even the missteps can be turned for good. Just like the same thing happened to the Children of Israel. Our journeys are designed to provoke a change within us. Just as a man chastens his son, so the Lord your God chastens you. Chastening is part of the process — it represents some of these stages. His Word, not necessarily our feelings and certainly not our opinion, is what teaches us how to journey and how to make our way towards our destiny. R-E-S-P-E-C-T
July 8, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Matthew 21:12–13, Jeremiah 7:11–12, 1 Samuel 2:30–35, Deuteronomy 3:23–26, Numbers 25:10–13
In our last portion we read where Pinchas demonstrated zeal for the Lord because the House of the Lord was being defiled. Rather than condemnation, Pinchas received a commendation — made priest. We also read in Matthew 21 where we see Yeshua going into the temple of God overturning tables and using a whip while others were defiling His holy temple. He states, “It is written, My House shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves”. If we do not honor Him, and especially in a space dedicated to Him, how long should we expect that He will remain in that sacred space? When He departs, the space will not remain empty. It will be inhabited by another presence; one that is an oppressor. If we do not lead and respect what is his, He will replace us with those who will. To some degree, God has entrusted His reputation to us. We are to be careful how we represent Him to others anywhere we are. We are to sanctify His Name which includes being respectful of His house. Genuine respect and zeal for God’s house leads to promotion. Let us have a zeal for His house that compels us to see His Will fulfilled. To Contend Or To Be Content
June 24, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Romans 12:3–16, Galatians 6:3–5, Genesis 28:6–9, Psalm 81:1–6, Numbers 16:1–3
When the Father calls us to walk His path, we have to learn to be content in every season that path may take us through. At times we can get transfixed on what our brothers and sisters paths may look like rather than our own. That is the wrong frame of mind. Look how Korah, Dathan and Abiram became discontent with what they were being called to do. It wasn’t enough for them to bear the ark of the covenant. Jealousy serviced, rebellion was displayed and Gods wrath followed. Some feel that their talents/gifts are better suited for what they want to do rather than what God actually called them to do. We need to be very careful that we don’t allow our hurts, grievances (legitimate or otherwise) and the emotions connected to them, drive us away from God. In this portion we are warned to separate from this type of influence when it is recognized lest what is coming upon them draw us in with it. Let us be careful about who and what we come against lest we find ourselves contending with God — that’s dangerous. The Words of a Few Affect Many
June 17, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Deuteronomy 1:26–33, Proverbs 26:11–12, 2 Peter 2:19–22, Numbers 14:39–43, Numbers 13:1–3
Unbelief and disconnect can affect the body at large. The speech and actions of a few can affect many, either for good or for bad. We see in this weeks Torah portion how ten men affected millions to their detriment. Joshua and Caleb would impact future generations - those who would posses the land. Instead of moving forward in faith they wanted to investigate it first. The ten spies saw the giants and deemed it impossible to take over. God had already promised the land to them, they simply needed to believe and take back what was theirs. They mentally gave into what they were accustomed to and that was being in bondage and living in defeat. They ignored the call to be free under God’s sovereignty and to overcome with the promise of His Word. If we focus so intently on man to the point that we consider our own counsel to be superior to God’s Voice and we neglect our calling, we are repeating the sins of the ten spies. Let us not repeat old ways of thinking. He promised He would be with us so let us walk in faith and obedience. The Danger of Double Vision
June 10, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Matthew 25:10–12, Numbers 8:1–4, Proverbs 29:18, 1 Corinthians 3:3–4, Ephesians 4:4–6
The menorah is the lamp of the Sanctuary. In a practical sense it provided light. From time to time, the bowls had to be cleaned; wicks replaced; oil replenished. All of this was necessary so that the purpose could be served. God prepares us for service and, in a manner of speaking, opens a door through which we must be prepared to enter if we are to function in our purpose. In Numbers 11:17 we see the Father placing His Spirit upon 70 elders of Israel to help Moses carry the burden of leading the people. They did not operate in the same position but the same Spirit in order for them to function in their purpose. In every congregation there must be a vision, a sense of purpose and direction. The Father always provides a window of opportunity for us to serve. He wants us to be united in one body, under Messiah with one spirit and one hope. We, as a body cannot pull in different directions. Trials will come. Hardships will come. We must endure because He is preparing us for a great purpose. Only by enduring and overcoming will we know it when that time comes. Until that time comes our eyes must be on Messiah; be of single vision — His vision for you. The Price of Redemption
April 6, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Luke 21:25–28, Genesis 4:3–8, Genesis 15:12–18, Numbers 33:3–4
Redemption has a price tag. For Israel to be redeemed, someone had to die. We see in Numbers 33:3-4 that Israel went out with boldness because their enemies had been vanquished. At the same time, their enemies were in deep mourning with the loss of their firstborn. We must recognize that redemption typically intersects with testing, trials and judgement. We will always have those that the enemy will use to challenge us and even at times try to detour us from the task the Father has us to accomplish. It has been that way, and it will be that way to the very end. Many of the tests we are all going through are conditioning us for others to come. Rather live in the dread of the testing, be confident of the deliverance. The price tag of our redemption is our faithfulness. We are here to sanctify His name. He has given us life and the opportunity to do so. Gird Up Your Loins
April 6, 2023 • Bill Cloud • Numbers 28:16–18, Leviticus 23:6–8, Exodus 12:15, Exodus 12:16–17, Job 38:1–3
This week we congregate to acknowledge the command given to us in regard to the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Chametz (yeast) is to be removed from the congregation which is called to be holy. Tradition doesn’t allow for the smallest amount of chametz to remain at Passover. Just as we remove it from our homes and lives, we also must remove it from the Body. Whether in a person’s life or in a congregation, sin must be dealt with properly so we can hear from Him clearly. It cannot be excused, overlooked, or swept under the rug. In Job 38:1-3, when Job was confronted with the circumstances of his life the Father told him to “prepare yourself” (gird up your loins) because he was about to put him to a task that would require all of his ability. In conjunction with the removal of leaven, the Almighty emphasized on the first day of unleavened bread, when He brought His people out of Egypt, that they had to eat in hast and with their loins girded. Meaning, to be ready at a moments notice with nothing in our lives that could keep us from hearing His call with clarity. Our Responsibility For Godly Order
July 30, 2022 • Bill Cloud • Numbers 30—32, Numbers 33—36
Mattot/Massei Numbers 30:1-32:42/Numbers 33:1-36:13 Our Responsibility For Godly Order Join us live for our Shabbat service with teaching from the Torah Portion by Bill Cloud. THINK before you speak... because God is listening. If a person makes a vow before the LORD, then He expects them to keep it. If we have pledged to follow the Messiah, then that is in a sense, a vow. We are expected to keep that pledge all the way. In this Torah Portion, we see the laws of when a woman makes a vow. These laws give us a wonderful picture of how the Creator designed the Godly order within marriage, and it is a reminder for us as His people to make sure that we help maintain that order. It is the responsibility of the man to step into his proper role of being head of the household. He should not be "lord of the manor," but rather, he should govern his household "in a manner that is pleasing to the LORD." Perhaps the reason Sarah called Abraham "lord," is because Abraham treated Sarah like a princess. Part of the vows made in marriage are that the husband and wife will function in their purpose... and because they have made a vow before the LORD, they are expected to keep it all the way. Lessons From Ba'al Peor
July 23, 2022 • Bill Cloud • Numbers 25:10—29:40
Pinchas Numbers 25:10-29:40 Lessons From Ba'al Peor Join us for our Shabbat Service with Bill Cloud and the Jacobs Tent Family! The namesake of this Torah Portion, Pinchas (Phineas), is most notably remembered for taking a javelin and running it through an Israelite (Zimri) and a Midianite woman (Cozbi), who were about to do the unthinkable in the presence of God. His actions, to some, might have seemed brash and over zealous, but to the Creator, His actions were just what was needed to put a plague to an end. His zeal was not motivated by envy or hate. In fact, a true zealot is one who is motivated by love and has zeal for God and His house. Aside from Zimri's sudden demise, what is even more baffling in this story is the blatant disregard he shows for the Father and His holiness in the first place. What could have possessed a man to so openly shake his fist in the face of the living God? Could it have been the negative influence of his neighbors a lack of respect for the authority over him? Regardless of the motives, we can be certain that his change of heart didn't happen overnight. That kind of change in a man happens over time, and it will continue to happen if no one is willing to step in and put a stop to it. Letting Judas Hold the Purse
July 16, 2022 • Bill Cloud • Numbers 22:2—25:9, Proverbs 1:10–16, John 12:1–7, Matthew 23:37–38, Numbers 24:5–6
In this portion, we see how the Creator knew what was in Balaam's heart even as he feigned being a servant of the most high, but He still chose to give him an opportunity to do that which was right. In the New Testament, we see Him give Judas a similar opportunity; however, both of these men were not willing to do the Father's will and instead, chose their own way. In Matthew 23:37-38, the Messiah says, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate." In other words, had they been willing, He would have gathered them. Had Judas been willing, He could have been saved. Had Balaam heeded the warnings, things would have been different. As a person, you are being tried in certain situations; your response may determine the future for yourself and others.
