Pinchas
Numbers 25:10-29:40

The namesake of this Torah Portion, Pinchas (Phineas), is most notably remembered for taking a javelin and running it through an Israelite (Zimri) and a Midianite woman (Cozbi), who were about to do the unthinkable in the presence of God. His actions, to some, might have seemed brash and over zealous, but to the Creator, His actions were just what was needed to put a plague to an end. His zeal was not motivated by envy or hate. In fact, a true zealot is one who is motivated by love and has zeal for God and His house. Aside from Zimri's sudden demise, what is even more baffling in this story is the blatant disregard he shows for the Father and His holiness in the first place. What could have possessed a man to so openly shake his fist in the face of the living God? Could it have been the negative influence of his neighbors a lack of respect for the authority over him? Regardless of the motives, we can be certain that his change of heart didn't happen overnight. That kind of change in a man happens over time, and it will continue to happen if no one is willing to step in and put a stop to it.
