We plan to have samples of each stage of production to make this a very productive day. What to bring (any or all of the below): Sewing machine, thread, etc… Scissors for sewers and non-sewers Brownbag lunch & beverage What you can do now: Tell everyone we are collecting used pillow cases in any condition. Yes, even with holes or threadbare cases are welcome. Donation drop off box at GLBC foyer, ark playground side by the women’s restroom. Clean out your fabric stash & your neighbors fabric stash, too. RSVP if you are joining us & if you will be a Sewer w/machine or a Non-Sewer so we can set-up the space RSVP if you are donating pillow cases or fabric so we can ensure we have enough material If you knit or crochet, please start on the washcloths 🛁 (details below) Please RSVP to let Veronica and/or Annemieke know if you can make it: booklooker4u@gmail.com, pannemieke@gmail.com The new charity is Luggage of Love (L.O.L.). This was started by a local, single mother who has experience with the foster care system. They provide a roller board suitcase, a travel size pillow, and a draw string bag for toiletries to children/ teens who get displaced. This provides a dignified way for them to keep and transport their belongings. Nobody wants them to have to leave their things behind because they can’t carry them all. They are asking for our help in making washcloths, drawstring bags and pillow cases for the travel pillows. They are giving us a lot of creative license so you can do something very neutral or go wild with color/ pattern. Here are some details: We can cut down any pillow case and use the parts to make the toiletry bags and travel pillow cases. If not we will use fabric. We will set up stations so that some people will trace pattern pieces and cut out what is needed. Then anyone who sews and can bring their machine will be set up to sew the different projects. There will also be a final station for cutting and inserting the drawstrings. As you can see we will need both sewers and non sewers to make this a success so please plan to come! Washcloths — Please make these out of soft 100% cotton yarn like the “I love this cotton” from Hobby lobby or any of the cottons recommended for the knitted knockers. The “kitchen” cotton like Sugar and Cream is a bit rough especially for young children. Aim for a finished size of about 6”x6” or 8”x8”. These can be knit or crochet washcloths, any color you want, enjoy! Drawstring Toiletry bags — I would recommend a poly/cotton blend because it doesn’t wrinkle easily and stands up to washing. They are pretty flexible on these. The ones I saw a picture of had a circular bottom (maybe 6” -7”in diameter) and were about 10” - 12” tall. These could also be made with a simple “boxed” bottom like a tote bag. Travel Pillow Cases — I would recommend making these out of a poly/cotton blend. The dimensions on the pillows are 14” x 20”. You can do a straight forward hemmed pillow case or an “envelope” style. I don’t think it matters. Remaining pillow cases will be for the PRC shopping bags for new parents to “shop” for all their newborn’s needs at the PRC.
