4th Sunday of Advent 2022
December 18, 2022 • Rev. Amanda Meade • Luke 1:39–58
This Sunday we heard songs from Elizabeth and Mary, two distinct women with distinct songs. They sang about joy and deep belonging, and invite us to feel as necessary and important people in God's story and this church's story. Mary's song is a response to that welcome and belonging, inviting us to bring that belonging and justice to the whole world. We don't just sing these songs during advent but can sing them all year long. 2nd Week of Advent 2022
December 4, 2022 • Rev. Amanda Meade • Isaiah 11:1–10, Luke 1:26–38
Last week we heard some of the most common and familiar words in scripture: "do not be afraid" after the angel greets Mary. We learned the words right after those are what help Mary and generations before her to say yes to God. Words of God's power and strength, God's favor and steadfast presence. Those words are for us too, God meets us and acknowledges our fears too, but reminds us we are not alone. You can say yes to God, for nothing is impossible for Him. August 28, 2022
August 28, 2022 • Rev. Amanda Meade • Luke 14:7–14, Luke 14:1
This week Jesus taught the religious leaders and us some new table manners, the importance of humility and hospitality if we are going to accept God's gracious invitation to join God's banquet. We considered who is at our table and who isn't, how do we stretch ourselves to welcome and be welcomed at a variety of tables to catch a glimpse of God's realm here on earth. “God does not look at the glitter of our guest list, God looks to see that we have practiced the generosity and inclusiveness of the kingdom in our daily social relationships. One standard offers the reward of social position, the other the reward of God’s favor.” -R. August 21, 2022
August 21, 2022 • Rev. Amanda Meade • Luke 13:10–17
This Sunday we talked about how Jesus wants to offer freedom to those who are bound up. He gave it miraculously to a woman bent over for eighteen years and tried to offer it to the synagogue leader who was bound up by a need to cling to his privileges and power by keeping things the same. Where do you need Jesus to offer you freedom, what are you clinging to that might be keeping you bound up? The Great Divider
August 14, 2022 • Rev. Arthur Ritter • Luke 12:49–56
This Sunday we welcomed Rev. Art Ritter aka Maren's dad to share a good word with us from Luke's gospel. He taught us about the ways following Jesus does ask us to choose a particular path, it may mean we act and think differently, even from those closest to us. Following Jesus is a choice and a challenge, one that doesn't always make our lives easier, but does make the world closer to God's kingdom. Fourth Week of Lent
March 27, 2022 • Rev. Amanda Meade • Luke 15:1–3, Luke 15:11–32
This week we are cultivating a resilient spirit by letting go of numbness and powerlessness. We explore the story where Jesus is challenged to answer the oldest question, first explored in Job, why do bad things happen to good people? How does his answer centering around repentance help us to move away from numbness and feeling powerless and strengthen our spirit's ability to move in a world full of tragedy? How can repentance move us to forgiveness and life, away from simply perishing? First Week of Lent
March 6, 2022 • Rev. Amanda Meade • Luke 4:1–13
We begin Lent this Sunday. Cultivate (verb): to prepare and use for the raising of crops; to foster the growth of; to improve by labor, care, or study; to refine; to further; to encourage. Let go (verb): relinquish one's grip on someone or something. Lent is a season of spiritual gardening, of inviting God to unearth in us what lies fallow, what needs to be tended, and what needs to die for new life to emerge. This Lent, we’re embracing the literal and spiritual practices of cultivating and letting go. Join us this Lent season to see what God wants to cultivate in you and our church family!
