Program – Did you know that 80% of incarcerated women are mothers? Children with incarcerated parents haven’t committed a crime. They are a vulnerable population who are oven overlooked and forgotten. Keeping in contact can be difficult from prison as offenders are often housed a long distance from their families. Those parents that maintain contact are up to 6 times less likely to return to prison. Women’s Storybook Project of Texas is a nonprofit that connects incarcerated moms with their children through the joy of literature. They help these mothers record stories and messages of love for their children and then mail the recordings along with the books so the children can hear their mother’s voice and know she is thinking of them. We will hear about this program from Penny Schmidt who has been involved for many years.
