Giving Greater Than Keeping

week 4

February 3, 2019 • Bryan Jones

This Sunday as we continue our “Greater Than” sermon series, we are going to take a look at the life that God has prepared for us as believers, and it’s a life that is greater than anything we have experienced. It’s a life of power and authority over sin. Like the person who is color-blind, we can go through life knowing there is more, but never experiencing it. But through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can turn our black and white world into color. I hope you will join me Sunday as we dive into God’s Word, and take a look at the life we can experience when we live in the power of the Holy Spirit.

More from Greater Than

Going Greater Than Staying

Google the term “comfort zone” and you will get results like “Why the Magic Happens When You Step Out of Your Comfort Zone,” and “Get Out of Your Comfort Zone in 9 Simple Steps.”  But what exactly is our comfort zone, and why do we need to step outside it?     Our “comfort zone” is that place where we feel calm and safe.  It’s different for everybody.  My comfort zone is different from yours.  If you’re not sure what your comfort zone is, there’s even a “Comfort Zone Calculator” to figure it out for you.  We all like being inside our comfort zone, because we’re not stressed.  But there are times in life when we have to push ourselves outside that safe space and into unfamiliar territory.   Jesus stepped way outside His comfort zone when He laid down His life on the cross, and He calls us to follow His example.  Now following Jesus probably doesn’t mean that you have to die.  But it does mean that you will have to have some uncomfortable conversations.  It means that you will have to obey Jesus’ command to share His story and make disciples.   This Sunday we will continue our sermon series “Greater Than” with a look at Jesus’ call to GO … to bear fruit and make disciples.  Will you step outside your comfort zone and follow Him?

Growth Greater Than Complacency

“Do I look more like Jesus today than I did yesterday?” That's the question we should be asking ourselves. Colossians 3:16 tells us about the path we are to follow as we embrace our mission to make disciples. It’s a path that we call sanctification – growing to be more like Jesus and living on mission with Him. But believe me, it’s very easy to make sanctification all about us. Do you ever feel like you will just naturally become more like Jesus if you do things like pray more and spend more time reading the Bible? Those are good things, and doing them will certainly move us along the path of sanctification. But it’s just as crucial that we grow in our resolve to live on mission with Jesus, and that mission is making disciples.

Community is Greater Than Isolation

I feel like God is stirring something in my heart; a vision for the church and why gathering on Sundays is so important. It's easy to let church become a ritual or even just an optional activity, but in order for us to grow to our full potential we need to intentionally engage with a community of believers. We are told in Hebrews 10:24 that we are to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” To “spur one another on” requires us to be part of a community where we worship, study, and grow together. In today’s culture people are finding it more and more difficult to be part of that community. Why? What are the obstacles that keep us from gathering?
