What Kind of Obedience?
July 16, 2023 • Dr. Keith Koteskey • Psalm 119:49–72
Nearly all of us would agree that a marker of faithfulness to God is obedience to His Word. After all, James tells us that we should not merely listen to the Word, but we should do what it says. However, many of us are not quick to consider the attitude with which we “do” it. In Psalm 119, we are challenged to move beyond begrudging compliance to a joyful engagement. Today we’re challenged to think about what kind of obedience marks our lives.
Watching and Waiting

Few of us like waiting for something. We live in an “instant everything” culture. And yet, could it be that waiting serves a very important purpose? For those who serve a promise-making, promise-keeping God, waiting for God to act helps direct their attention toward a future in which that faithful God redeems a problem-ridden world. Today we look at two biblical characters who were characterized by their anticipatory waiting. Their story inspires us to be a people who are always watching and waiting.

Many of us can be quite guarded, even with close friends. This hidden heart can be a serious limitation to Christian growth. Vulnerability in Christian community is the answer. Opening wide our hearts to one another is one expression of truthfulness and makes meaningful accountability possible. But only if we’re willing to be seen.

It’s so very easy for us to say that we believe that God can do anything, but we often live as if we don’t really believe that. A father who encounters Jesus in the Gospel of Mark helpfully illustrates that strange tension. Jesus’ response helps us see a deeper truth about who He is and the nature of a deeper faith that can change how we live!
