What are we to make of President Trump’s arrest of Nicolás Maduro and the United States taking temporary control of Venezuelan oil?

Is this really just about oil and drugs, or is something much deeper unfolding in Latin America?

In this teaching, we examine reporting from Christian journalist Alex Newman, who has documented a coordinated communist and cartel-driven effort reshaping Latin America. In Venezuela, the distinction between government and organized crime has collapsed. The Cartel de los Soles functions as the regime itself, led by senior military and intelligence officials, with Nicolás Maduro at the head as an illegitimate ruler who rose to power through fraudulent elections.

But this is not merely about corruption or personal enrichment. Venezuela is part of a broader ideological project tied to the São Paulo Forum, a network founded in 1990 by Fidel Castro, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and other Marxist movements, including the FARC.
