The Egyptian people did not worship God. They worshiped many false gods. They worshiped a god of the Nile River, a god who had a head like a frog, and many others. In each of the ten plagues, God showed the Egyptians that their gods were false and that He was the only true God.

The first plague that God brought on Egypt was water turning to blood. God told Moses and Aaron to hit the water of the Nile River with a walking stick. When they did that, the water changed to blood. God also told them to hold the walking stick over the rivers, canals, lakes and every place where water was stored. When Moses and Aaron did that, the water in those places also turned to blood.

Can you imagine how terrible that was? But that was only part of the problem. Exodus 7:21 tells us what happened next. “The fish in the river died, and the river began to stink. So the Egyptians could not drink the water from the river. The blood was everywhere.” The smell must have been awful! But Pharaoh’s pride and stubbornness kept him from seeing God’s power. He refused to free the Israelites.
