The book of Mark was written by Mark, who was also a follower of Jesus. Mark wrote his book for non-Jewish people. Mark carefully explained Jewish customs to help his readers understand about Jesus’ life on earth. Some people believe that Mark may have learned a lot about Jesus from Peter. They also believe that Matthew and Luke used Mark’s information to help them write their books about Jesus.
The book of Mark is the shortest Gospel book. Mark does not begin his book by telling about Jesus’ birth like Matthew does. Instead he begins by talking about John the Baptizer. Mark 1:1-2 tells us about this. “The Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, begins with what the prophet Isaiah said would happen. He wrote: ‘Listen! I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare the way for you.’” John the Baptizer preached about repentance and prepared the Jewish people for Jesus’ message of salvation.
Mark wrote his book to show us that even though Jesus was God’s Son, He was also a humble servant. Mark does this by telling about the things that Jesus did while He was on earth — His miracles and the things He did to help people.
Follow Jesus’ example. Be a humble servant and show God’s love to people you meet today.
