Falling from Grace

September 14

Some people say that if you receive God’s grace, you can never fall away from that grace. But the Bible does not teach that. There are many verses in the Bible that encourage us to stand firm and not give up. Does this mean that God will stop forgiving us if we sin too much? No! As long as we continue to trust God, He will stay faithful to us.

But if we give up or if we stop trusting God’s grace to save us, we will “fall” from grace. Once we stop trusting God’s grace to save us, we will no longer be covered by His grace. In Jude 3, Jude encouraged Christians to continue trusting in God’s grace. “Dear friends, I wanted very much to write to you about the salvation we all share together. But I felt the need to write to you about something else: I want to encourage you to fight hard for the faith that God gave his holy people. God gave this faith once, and it is good for all time.”

Think about the story in an earlier devotion about the drowning person. Imagine that a person on land holds out a long pole for the person to grab onto. That is like God giving us His grace through Jesus. As long as the person holds into the pole, he will be safe. But if he lets go, he will begin to drown. In the same way, if we stop trusting Jesus to save us, we will begin dying in our sins.

Be sure that you continue to stand firm and not give up!
