Christmas Season

December 1

December 1, 2018 • Donna Howard

Today is the 1st day of December. Many people around the world are excited to start celebrating the Christmas season. Our devotion today is about Jesus’ birth. We will learn more about the Christmas story throughout the month of December.

We don’t know a lot about Mary’s husband, Joseph. The Bible tells us that he was a good man and worked as a carpenter. The Bible doesn’t tell us how old he was when Jesus was born or when he died.

Joseph and Mary were engaged to be married. I wonder how he felt when Mary told him that she was pregnant with God’s Son. He was probably afraid of what other people would think about Mary’s pregnancy. Maybe he wondered if he could be a good earthly father to God’s Son.

Matthew 1:20-21 tells us how God encouraged Joseph. “But after Joseph thought about this, an angel from the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, ‘Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to accept Mary to be your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You will name him Jesus. Give him that name because he will save his people from their sins.’”

Joseph trusted God to help him be a good husband and a good father. You can trust God today to help you, too!
