Samson

Restoration

July 10, 2016 • Jumaine Jones

Samson may seem like a tragic story, but it actually ends triumphantly. He did not regain his sight, but found himself with a renewed sense of focus and spiritual sight during the last few moments of his life. God wants men to realize that all is not lost. He is a God that stands ready restore men to a place of victory. Our latter days can be greater than our former.

Strength

This is the chapter that many know Samson for. It’s where Delilah cut Samson’s hair resulting in him loosing his strength and ultimately, his life. Though Delilah has developed a bad reputation, Samson lost his strength by his own doing. He placed himself in a position that caused him to loose his strength. God has given men strength. Yet, that strength is being wasted by giving them to the wrong women.

Pride

Samson, like many men before and after him, had an issue with pride. Pride reveals itself in many forms. But the focus of pride is “self.” Pride causes us to lift ourselves high, rather than humbling ourselves low. When we humble ourselves, God can exalt us in due time.

Honoring Women

After Solomon lost a bet with men involved with his wedding, he said, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, You would not have found out my riddle.” Like Samson, we still use agricultural and animal terms to describe women. Women continue to be objectified in the media and the eyes of men. Many women can’t walk down the street without men cat calling and disrespecting them. Men must honor women and women should carry themselves in a way that is honorable.

Anger

Many men struggle with anger. Anger is often rooted in unaddressed issues, such as fatherlessness, family challenges, low self-esteem, low inferiority, and feeling oppressed. Our anger then leads us to making unwise decisions that we may later regret.

Compromise

June 5, 2016 • Jumaine Jones

One of the reasons Samson failed to live up to his potential was due to compromises. Even though Samson was called to fulfill the Nazarene vow, he broke it on several occasions. Men should not break or run from their commitments, but keep them. The women in their lives should seek to be a champion in men keeping their commitments, not a partner in breaking them.
