Peter's denial of Jesus was a result of his overconfidence and his refusal to fully let go of the things of the world. After denying Jesus three times, the rooster's crow would always become a reminder to Peter of his betray in a moment of weakness.

Oftentimes Satan attacks our strengths rather than our weaknesses. Jesus warned Simon Peter that Satan asked to "sift" him in order to bring Simon Peter to a point of failure. God uses those moments of overconfidence to shape and mold us to being a more effective disciple.
