As the new edict seems to spell out imminent death for the Jewish people, God appears to be starkly absent in Babylon. Yet, as Esther and Mordecai face the unraveling of their security and comfort, the gaping hole that remains illuminates God’s sovereignty and power. It is in the darkness that Esther and Mordecai begin to see that true safety and status cannot ever be found in earthly things.
