For many of us we have this idolized image of the nativity including the Shepherds with their cute little sheep bowing down at the manager worshipping Jesus. Let me tell you in the first century shepherds were not to be trusted and would not have wanted them to visit. These would be the people that would ruin your Best Christmas ever. None the less God appears to this group of shepherds and invites them to worship Jesus. The invitation teaches us a lot about the nature of who God is and the peace God brings.

When the magi set out on their journey, they were not guaranteed to find the messiah. But throughout their journey they looked up at the stars maintaining a sense of wonder over certainty. Past results are the best predictor of future performance...or are they? Sometimes, our experience of the past causes us to limit what we think is possible in the future. Negative experiences can cause us to become cynical and miss out on the promise of Christmas. But Christmas invites us to trust that God has new possibilities and a new future in store for us.
