Life on the Edge

On this last Sunday of our Momentum sermon series, we want to preach about “gleaning.” Gleaning is not a word that we use a lot, but was a commandment of God. In Leviticus 19:9,10 the Lord said, “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the LORD your God.” God tells us that we should leave the edges of our fields for others. Unfortunately, most of us are over-worked, over-scheduled, over-budgeted, and the idea of extra is a foreign concept. I wonder how many opportunities we have had to speak a word of life into someone, but we didn’t because we had another meeting we had scheduled. I wonder how many opportunities we have had to give generously to a family member, neighbor, or even stranger, but we didn’t because we had not left room in our budget to bless others. What would it look like if the people of God had some margin in their life for prayer, for building relationships, and for giving generously? Join us this Sunday to imagine a life with enough space to be the hands and feet of Jesus as he needs us, and not just as we plan.
