In making major decisions it can be helpful to consider the burdens and the benefits – to count the cost. The most important decision that anyone will ever make is whether or not to follow Jesus. Jesus said that choice will cost you plenty. But He also assured you that the benefits so clearly outweighed the costs that you would gladly choose to follow Him. The King’s commission, or Great Commission, provides the essence of the mission for all of Jesus’ disciples. Throughout Matthew’s gospel we’ve discovered Jesus’ invitation to become citizens of His kingdom. The values and benefits of the kingdom of heaven, or kingdom of God, have been contrasted with the values and benefits of this world. Imagine the disciples in the midst of Jesus’ arrest, trials, and crucifixion.
